Theme Parks and Family Attractions in Wales 2026

Wales has six major theme parks and family attraction parks — from the world’s fastest zip line in a disused slate quarry to a Pembrokeshire zoo with a vintage fairground.

Most are concentrated in North and West Wales. None of them look like a typical British theme park. The best use the Welsh landscape — slate caverns, quarry cliffs, open farmland — as their setting, which puts them in a different category from anything south of the border.

Zip World: Four Sites, One Extreme Day Out

Zip World operates four sites across North Wales, each with a different character. They share a booking system at zipworld.co.uk — book well in advance for summer weekends.

Zip World Penrhyn (Bethesda, LL57 4YG): The flagship site in Penrhyn Quarry — the largest slate quarry in the world, now partially disused. Velocity 2 is the fastest zip line in the world at up to 125mph, dropping 500 metres over the quarry floor. Single descent approximately £60 — verify at zipworld.co.uk. Minimum age 7, minimum weight 35kg. Also on site: Fforest Coaster (toboggan run), Go-Karts, and a quarry explorer experience.

Zip World Llechwedd (Blaenau Ffestiniog, LL41 3NB): Underground adventure inside the Llechwedd Slate Caverns. Bounce Below — the world’s largest underground trampoline experience — fills a cathedral-sized cavern with interconnected trampolines and slides. Deep Mine Tour explores tunnels 500 feet underground. Above ground: the Titan zip line runs 1km over the mountain. Approximately £25–£60 depending on experience.

Zip World Fforest (Betws-y-Coed, LL24 0HA): Woodland-based activities for younger children. Tree Hoppers aerial assault course is designed for ages 3–12. Tree Hoppers Plus extends the course upwards for older children and adults. The most family-friendly Zip World site for mixed-age groups.

Zip World Tower (Conwy, LL32 8QE): The Skyride gondola gives views over the Conwy Valley. Less extreme than the other sites — works well as an add-on to a Conwy Castle visit.

Oakwood Theme Park: Wales’s Biggest Roller Coaster Park

Oakwood is Wales’s only dedicated roller coaster theme park. It sits in the Pembrokeshire countryside near Narberth (SA67 8DE), 8 miles north of Tenby.

Megafobia is the headline attraction — a wooden roller coaster regularly ranked among the best in Europe, reaching 65mph over 1,600 metres of track. It opened in 1996 and has won multiple awards in the Roller Coaster Census.

Vertigo is a 58-metre freefall tower. Speed is the hydraulic-launch steel coaster, accelerating from 0 to 60mph in 1.9 seconds. Drenched — a water ride — is unavoidable if you visit between May and September.

The park also has a dedicated children’s area (Neverland) with rides suitable for ages 3 and over. Adult day tickets approximately £28–£35 — book online in advance for the best price. Verify at oakwoodthemepark.co.uk. Open late March to November, closed in winter.

Folly Farm: Zoo, Farm and Vintage Fairground

Folly Farm near Tenby (SA68 0XA) is the most-visited paid attraction in Wales. It earns that position by combining three entirely different things on one site.

The zoo holds over 750 animals including giraffes, white rhinos, Amur leopards, meerkats, and penguins. The big cat section — housing lions and cheetahs — opened in 2015 and is one of the few in Wales. All enclosures have been designed for close sightlines. Allow 2–3 hours for the zoo alone.

The farm has daily feeding sessions for cows, sheep, pigs, and goats. The barn area allows hands-on contact with smaller animals — particularly popular with under-5s.

The vintage fairground is unusual and worth visiting in its own right. The rides are genuine Victorian and Edwardian fairground pieces — a gallopers roundabout, a helter skelter, a swing boat set, and dodgem cars from the 1950s — maintained and running.

Day tickets approximately £21–£26 adults, £19–£23 children — book online. Open daily in summer, weekends in winter. Verify at follyfarm.co.uk.

Greenwood Family Park: Eco-Adventure in Eryri

Greenwood sits at the foot of the Eryri (Snowdonia) mountains near Caernarfon (LL55 3AQ). It is the most eco-conscious family park in Wales — built from natural materials, powered largely by renewable energy, and designed around outdoor activity rather than mechanical rides.

The Green Dragon Roller Coaster is the world’s first people-powered roller coaster — riders pump handles to carry the car to the top of the hill before the descent. SolarSplash is a water ride powered by a solar array. The Giant Jumper is a grass-covered bouncing pillow covering half an acre.

Archery, barefoot nature trails, woodland walks, and a junior assault course fill the rest of the day. The park is particularly good for children aged 3–12 who aren’t yet ready for the intensity of Zip World or Oakwood. Day tickets approximately £18–£22 — verify at greenwoodfamilypark.com. Open April to September.

Surf Snowdonia / Adventure Parc Snowdonia

Adventure Parc Snowdonia near Dolgarrog (LL32 8QE) opened the world’s first inland surfing lagoon in 2015. The WAVEGARDEN technology generates consistent, perfectly formed waves in a 300-metre freshwater lagoon — the same technology used by surf parks worldwide.

Wave sessions run throughout the day for beginner, intermediate, and advanced surfers. Beginner lessons included with first visits. The lagoon water stays 28–30°C. Sessions approximately £35–£65 depending on wave frequency and experience level — verify at adventureparcsnowdonia.com.

Beyond surfing: the site also has a high ropes course, axe throwing, a zip line, and a beachside café. It works as a half-day stop on a North Wales itinerary — close to the A470 between Betws-y-Coed and Conwy.

Henblas Country Park: Anglesey’s Family Day Out

Henblas Country Park on Anglesey (LL62 5AZ) combines a working farm with outdoor activities across 100 acres. It is the largest family attraction on the island and a useful full-day option when the weather limits beach time.

The farm tour runs daily with tractor-and-trailer rides around the working fields. Animal handling sessions cover lambs (spring), piglets, and poultry year-round. The outdoor play area includes a zip line, go-karts, and a 9-hole adventure golf course. Indoor soft play for under-5s.

Day tickets approximately £11–£14 — significantly cheaper than the major parks. Verify at henblas.co.uk. Open daily April to October, weekends in winter.

Frequently Asked Questions: Theme Parks Wales

What is the best theme park in Wales?

Zip World Penrhyn is the most spectacular single experience — the world’s fastest zip line over a disused slate quarry has no equivalent in Britain. Oakwood is the best conventional theme park for roller coaster fans. Folly Farm is the most all-round family day out, combining a zoo, farm, and vintage fairground in one site.

Is Oakwood Theme Park worth it?

Yes, for families with children aged 7 and over who enjoy roller coasters. Megafobia is one of the best wooden roller coasters in Europe and is the main reason to visit. Younger children (3–6) have the dedicated Neverland area. Book tickets online in advance — same-day gate prices are significantly higher than pre-booked rates.

Which Wales theme park is best for young children?

Folly Farm is the best for under-7s — the farm animals, vintage fairground, and zoo are all accessible for small children and not frightening. Greenwood Family Park near Caernarfon is excellent for ages 3–10, with the eco-adventure focus and gentle outdoor activities. Henblas on Anglesey is the best budget option for younger families.

Where is Zip World?

Zip World has four North Wales sites: Penrhyn Quarry near Bethesda (LL57 4YG), Llechwedd Slate Caverns at Blaenau Ffestiniog (LL41 3NB), Fforest at Betws-y-Coed (LL24 0HA), and Tower at Conwy (LL32 8QE). All four are in Gwynedd or Conwy and can be combined on a 2–3 day North Wales itinerary.
