CL Sites and Farm Pitches in Wales: Small, Quiet and Off the Radar

CL (Certificated Location) sites are small private sites licensed for up to 5 touring units at a time. They’re the best-kept secret in Welsh caravanning — cheaper, quieter, and often in better locations than large commercial parks.

CLs are exclusive to Caravan and Motorhome Club members. Membership costs approximately £60/year. Pitch fees at Welsh CLs typically run £12–£18/night — roughly half the cost of commercial parks.

The Club lists over 200 CLs across Wales. The highest concentration is in Powys, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire. Most are farm-based. Facilities range from electric hookup and a water tap only, through to modern shower blocks on working farms.

Common facilities at Welsh CLs: electric hookup (most), chemical toilet disposal point (most), water tap (all), shower/toilet block (some), laundry (few). Confirm facilities when booking — these are small private operations and standards vary.

The Camping and Caravanning Club runs an equivalent scheme called CSs (Certificated Sites). Wales has approximately 180 CSs. Search both club databases to find the best small-site options near your route.

For farm stay touring with full farm immersion — animals, farm activities, home produce — see our dedicated Farm Stays in North Wales and Farm Holiday Cottages guides.

Booking Tips for Touring Caravan Sites in Wales 2026

Book coastal sites before March.

Pembrokeshire, Gower and Anglesey coastal parks fill July and August by February. If you want a specific site in peak season, book immediately after Christmas.

Check the pitch size before booking.

Welsh farm sites and smaller CLs sometimes have limited turning space or narrow access lanes. Sites that list pitches as “suitable for motorhomes and smaller caravans” typically mean 6–7 metres maximum length. Check if you have a twin-axle or outfit over 8 metres.

Use the Pitchup and CAMC apps.

Pitchup.com aggregates availability across hundreds of Welsh sites. The Caravan and Motorhome Club app includes CL locations on a map. Both are worth having open on the road for last-minute bookings.

Off-season pricing is significantly lower.

Many Welsh sites drop pitch prices by 30–40% in October and November. Eryri in autumn is excellent — lower crowds, better colour, same mountain walks. Spring from late March is similarly good value.

Check for 2026 events near your dates.

The Royal Welsh Agricultural Show runs in Builth Wells in late July. Accommodation across Powys and Ceredigion fills completely during this week. Similarly, the National Eisteddfod moves location annually — check dates and location for 2026 before booking in that area.

Dogs.

Most Welsh caravan sites accept dogs but some limit numbers to two per pitch. A small number of coastal sites apply seasonal dog restrictions on the adjacent beach (typically May to September). Check site rules before booking if travelling with dogs.

Frequently Asked Questions: Touring Caravan Sites in Wales

What is the best touring caravan site in Wales?

Caerfai Bay Caravan Park near Tyddewi (St Davids) in Pembrokeshire is consistently rated the best-positioned touring site in Wales. Pitches sit on a clifftop with direct views over St Brides Bay. Hendre Mynach at Barmouth is the top-rated site in North Wales, combining sea views with excellent facilities and flat pitches.

Are there any caravan sites open all year in Wales?

Fewer than 30 Welsh touring sites operate year-round. The most reliable year-round options are Bryn Gloch at Betws Garmon (Eryri), Tredegar House Country Park (Newport) and Freshwater East Caravan Club Site (Pembrokeshire). Most other sites open March or Easter and close in October or November.

How much does a touring caravan pitch cost in Wales?

Expect approximately £18–£35/night for a standard pitch with electric hookup at a commercial site. CL and CS sites (Caravan Club and Camping Club small sites) typically charge £12–£18/night. Peak season (July–August) and coastal sites command the highest prices. Off-season pitches at the same sites often cost 30–40% less. Always verify current pricing at the site directly.

Do I need club membership to use caravan sites in Wales?

No. Most commercial touring parks in Wales are open to everyone — no membership required. Club membership (CAMC or Camping and Caravanning Club) is only required to use CL/CS small sites and club-operated parks. Membership costs approximately £60/year and pays for itself quickly if you use CLs regularly, given their lower nightly rates.

Which part of Wales is best for a caravan holiday?

Pembrokeshire suits beach-focused caravanning — more Blue Flag beaches per mile than anywhere else in Wales and some of the best-positioned cliff-top sites. Eryri (Snowdonia) suits walkers and mountain scenery — lakeside pitches with direct mountain access. Anglesey suits families wanting calm beaches and shorter driving distances. Mid Wales (Powys and Ceredigion) suits those wanting quiet rural touring with very low site density and dark skies.

Can I wild camp with a caravan in Wales?

No. Wild camping in Wales does not extend to caravans or motorhomes parked on open land. Vehicles require a designated licensed pitch or landowner permission. Some remote farm CL sites offer the quietest legal alternative to wild camping. See our Wild Camping in Wales guide for details on what is and isn’t permitted.
