North Cardigan Bay in the Snowdonia National Park

6. Shell Island Llanbedr, Gwynedd

Shell Island is truly a camping phenomenon. The whole place has been preserved in a wild and relatively undeveloped state in the unique location on the North Cardigan Bay in the Snowdonia National Park. Attracting families from all over the UK and Europe, lucky campers get to pick where they pitch within the 300 acres of dedicated land, supposedly making it Europe’s largest campsite.

While, strictly speaking, it’s not an island at all, the remoteness helps to retain an island feel despite the large sand dunes that now link it to the mainland. The Shell Island campsite caters for tents, motorhomes and campervans but does not take caravans. There are even a few pitches level with the seashore, although all are close to the large beach with easy access. The campsite has lots of useful facilities including shops, a snack bar, a licensed bar and a restaurant.

The beauty of Shell Island is that it’s a remote, self-contained camping community, cut off from the rest of the world, yet, there is easy access to the nearby pub, shops and cafes. If you’re looking for unspoilt campsites on the Welsh coast, this is the one to start with. Whether you go for the day or a week’s holiday, Shell Island offers everybody their own piece of paradise.
