Sea Fishing in Wales 2026: Best Shore Marks, Charter Boats and Shark Trips

By the Wales.org Travel Team | Updated April 2026

A grassy cliff overlooks a secluded rocky cove with clear turquoise water—perfect for sea fishing in Wales—and a small sandy beach, all set against a vivid blue sky.

Wales has over 750 miles of coastline — and all of it is free to fish. No licence is needed for sea fishing from the shore in Wales. You can cast from any beach, pier, breakwater, or headland with public access, using as many rods as you wish, without paying a penny. This makes sea fishing the most accessible and affordable form of angling in the country, and one of the best ways to experience the Welsh coast.

At a Glance: Sea Fishing in Wales

  • Licence: NOT required for sea fishing. Free from shore — no licence, no limit on rods.
  • Best for families: Epic Fishing Trips, New Quay — £30 adults, £25 children, age 5+, all equipment, dolphins.
  • Best for sharks: Pembrokeshire coast — porbeagle, blue sharks, threshers. Charter from St Davids, Milford Haven, Dale.
  • Best shore fishing: Aberdyfi coast (40+ species), Llŷn Peninsula (year-round), Pembrokeshire headlands.
  • Best season: Summer for mackerel and bass. July–Sept for sharks. Winter for cod. Year-round for something.
  • Species: Bass, mackerel, cod, pollack, rays, conger eels, sharks, tope, dogfish, bream, and 30+ more.

But shore fishing is only the beginning. Charter boats operate from harbours across Wales, taking anglers out to wrecks, reefs, and the open Celtic Sea in search of conger eels, tope, pollack, and — off the Pembrokeshire coast — porbeagle and blue sharks. Family-friendly operators in Cardigan Bay welcome children from age 5 aboard modern catamarans, with all equipment provided and dolphins regularly spotted alongside the catch.

This guide covers the best sea fishing locations and charter operators in Wales for 2026. New to fishing? Start with our beginner’s guide to fishing in Wales for licensing, equipment, and species. Prefer freshwater? See our guide to coarse fishing in Wales.

Shore Fishing: Free Sea Fishing From the Welsh Coast

Shore fishing is the simplest and most affordable entry point into sea angling. All you need is a beachcaster rod, a reel, line, weights, hooks, and bait (lugworm, ragworm, or mackerel strip from a local tackle shop). No licence, no permit, no fee. The entire 750-mile Welsh coast is yours.

Aberdyfi Coast — Best All-Round Shore Fishing in Wales

The Aberdyfi coast in Mid Wales showing the stunning seaside village nestled on the edge of Eryri National Park where over 40 species of sea fish can be caught

The stunning village of Aberdyfi sits on the southern edge of Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park, where the Dyfi Estuary meets the open sea. This stretch of coast is home to approximately 40 species of fish, making it one of the most diverse sea fishing locations in Wales. Charter a boat for conger eels, cod, pollack, and ling in deeper water. From the shore, the coast between Aberdyfi and Tywyn offers thrilling bass fishing — the moment a weighty bass first seizes your bait, you will understand why people become obsessed with this species.

Aberdyfi is also a beautiful holiday destination in its own right — colourful harbourside cottages, excellent restaurants, and Eryri’s mountains rising behind. Combine a morning’s fishing with an afternoon exploring the national park. For accommodation, browse holiday cottages near Aberdyfi.

Llŷn Peninsula — Best for Year-Round Shore Fishing

The Llŷn Peninsula in North Wales offers genuine year-round sea fishing — there is always something to catch. Cast your hook at Porth Colman for small sharks, try your luck at Morfa Nefyn for a mixed bag, or head to Porth Neigwl (Hell’s Mouth) — one of the best bass marks in North Wales. The peninsula’s exposed Atlantic-facing beaches produce consistent surf and strong tides that concentrate baitfish, drawing in predators like bass, pollack, and rays.

Charter boats also operate from the Llŷn, taking anglers to offshore reefs for pollack, bream, bass, and more. The peninsula is steeped in myth and legend, making it a rewarding destination beyond the fishing. For more on the area, see our North Wales guide.

More Shore Fishing Locations

Other outstanding shore marks include the Gower Peninsula (bass from Rhossili and Llangennith, rays and flounder from Port Eynon, cod in winter), Anglesey (bass and mackerel from Trearddur Bay and Rhosneigr, rays from Aberffraw), and the Glamorgan Heritage Coast (cod, bass, and whiting from Ogmore and Southerndown). Local tackle shops are the best source of current information on what is being caught where.

Family-Friendly Sea Fishing From New Quay — Best for Families

A family sea fishing trip departing from New Quay harbour in Cardigan Bay aboard the Legend of New Quay catamaran run by Epic Fishing Trips

Epic Fishing Trips from New Quay in Cardigan Bay is the leading family-friendly sea fishing operator in Wales. Their purpose-built catamaran “Legend of New Quay” (over 10 metres long, nearly 4 metres wide, twin 150hp Yamaha engines) is exceptionally stable — a far cry from traditional fishing boats that roll and pitch. Children from age 5 are welcome.

The team handles all the messy work — baiting hooks, unhooking fish — so you just need to cast and reel. All fishing equipment is provided free of charge. Trip options include:

  • 1.5-hour Epic Fishing Trip: £30 adults, £25 children. Perfect for first-timers and families.
  • 2-hour trip: Slightly longer, more fishing time.
  • 4-hour charter: Deeper water, bigger fish. Small groups.
  • 9-hour full-day charter: Serious fishing. May–June targets tope to 50lb+ and black bream. September targets specimen bass with specialist lure casting guided by one of Wales’s most renowned bass guides.

What makes New Quay fishing special is the wildlife. Cardigan Bay is home to over 300 resident bottlenose dolphins, and sightings on fishing trips are common. Harbour porpoises and grey seals are also regularly spotted. You may go for the fishing and come back talking about the dolphins.

Book online at epicfishingtrips.co.uk — no booking commission. Book ahead for school holidays. The boat departs from The Big Pier, New Quay Harbour, SA45 9NW. For more family activities nearby, see our Cardigan Bay with kids guide.

Shark Fishing Off the Pembrokeshire Coast — Best for Adventure

For the most exhilarating sea fishing experience in Wales, head to Pembrokeshire. The waters off the south-west coast — particularly the Celtic Deeps — are some of the best shark fishing grounds in the UK. Charter boats operate from St Davids, Neyland, Milford Haven, and Dale, targeting:

  • Blue sharks — the most commonly caught, with fish regularly exceeding 100lb. July–September.
  • Porbeagle sharks — a powerful, cold-water species. Specimens to 200lb+ are possible. June–October.
  • Thresher sharks — rarer, with their distinctive long tail fins. Occasional catches.
  • Mako sharks — the rarest and most prized. Very occasional but not unheard of.

Most shark fishing is catch-and-release — the fish are tagged for scientific research and returned alive. Beyond sharks, the Celtic Deeps are home to sunfish, whales, and dolphins. A shark fishing charter is genuinely one of the most thrilling days out you can have in Wales.

Deep Sea Fishing From Aberdyfi and the Llŷn Peninsula

Charter boats also operate from Aberdyfi (targeting conger eels on wrecks, cod, pollack, and ling in deeper water) and from harbours on the Llŷn Peninsula (pollack, bream, bass, and mixed species). Charter trips typically provide all equipment, bait, and expert instruction. Prices vary by operator and trip length — expect approximately £40–£60 per person for a half-day, £80–£120 for a full day. Private charters for small groups cost more but offer a tailored experience.

When to Go Sea Fishing in Wales

Spring (April–May): Tope arrive in Cardigan Bay — 50lb+ fish are common. Bass begin to appear along the south and west coasts. Mackerel start showing from late May.

Summer (June–August): Peak season. Mackerel shoals arrive in numbers — excellent sport from shore or boat. Bass fishing improves through the summer. Shark season opens off Pembrokeshire (blue sharks from July). Black bream on reef marks. The best time for family charter trips.

Autumn (September–November): The finest bass fishing of the year — specimen fish feed hard before winter. Shark season continues into October. Cod start arriving on the north and west coasts from October. Whiting appear in numbers.

Winter (December–March): Cod fishing at its best from shore marks and boats. Whiting and dogfish provide reliable sport. Charter boat availability is weather-dependent. Fewer anglers on the beach — solitude and fresh air guaranteed.

Practical Information for Sea Anglers

No licence needed. Sea fishing from shore or boat requires no rod licence in Wales. Free to fish from any public beach, pier, breakwater, or headland.

Regulations still apply. Minimum size limits and daily bag limits govern several species. Bass: catch-and-release only February–March, minimum size 42cm, strictly 1 fish per day bag limit (April–January). Eels: must be returned alive. Check the NRW website for current regulations.

Equipment for shore fishing: A beachcaster rod (12ft), reel, line, weights, hooks, and bait. Lugworm, ragworm, and mackerel strip are the most versatile baits. Buy from local tackle shops, which are also the best source of advice on what is being caught locally.

Charter boats provide everything. Rods, reels, tackle, bait, and instruction are included on most charter trips. You just turn up. Waterproofs and sun protection recommended. Check with the operator regarding seasickness — calmer conditions are best for first-timers.

Keep your catch or release it. Most charter operators let you keep edible fish (mackerel, bream, bass within limits). Shark fishing is catch-and-release. Always follow minimum size regulations.
